Work In Progress:
'Gutterball (or how I learnt to stop worrying about my failed career as a Tenpin Bowler)'
Residency- Gulliver's, Glasgow
Residency Wk 1: So, I'm cleaning out a former beer cellar to build a portable bowling lane for a piece called 'Gutterball (or how I learnt not to worry about my failed career as a tenpin bowler)'. The space is perfectly dingy with gone-off beer still running through the lines, I can't imagine a better setting than a sticky, vinegary basement to be working on a bowling project. So far I've got two bowling balls, a set of ten pins and a crash-mat- now just to start building my lane!
While I'm waiting for the wood to make the bowling lane with, I've been making a seating area. I've combined parts from a few broken bar stools and bench seating to make a cushioned seat and table. I re-upholstered the seating in a retro blue faux leather and have started sanding back the wooden legs- mostly to get rid of the chewing gum and cigarette burns.
I've designed a bowling shirt that I'm going to start making, and I've found a great local designer that I want to embroider a patch for the back. I've also been coming up with ideas for the funky animations that appear on the screen after you score, but possibly combining live actions/sculptural objects instead? I thought a giant kids inflatable bowling set was definitely the way forward for thinking about this... or just for shits and giggles.
